Do You Believe In Magic

It’s nineteen sixty-something and the kids in our neighborhood are having a deep philosophical debate.

“He does too!” “He does not!” “You’re a dummy head!” “ See if Santa brings you anything this year!”

Yes, you guessed it the age old challenge of the belief in Santa Claus.

If you don’t believe you run the risk of not getting a gift under the Christmas Tree. If you do believe then you may be chastised by a jury of your peers.

Is it better to play it safe and say you believe or do you cave in to peer pressure?

As editorialist back in 1897 Francis Pharcellus Church argued the point with some of these famous words “ Yes, VIRGINIA, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.”

I believe in the generosity of people, that all people are basically good and that until their life situation changes that people will continue to be good throughout their lives.

Is this belief in people’s natural generosity and goodness challenged in my life each day.? Certainly!

I also believe that when shown kindness and a willingness to help others that are in need people will instinctively turn to kindness themselves.

I know I can’t control how someone will act or react but I do know that I can influence people through my actions and through my words.
