The One About Independence Day

I watched an interview with the author Douglas MacKinnon regarding his new book “The 56: Liberty Lessons From Those Who Risked All to Sign The Declaration of Independence”

The author brought out a point that I never considered. The men that created and signed the Declaration of Independence were signing their own death sentences.

Not only their own but that of their family. MacKinnon gave accounts of how the farms, the houses, the mothers and fathers, and even their wives became enemies of the crown. And they were hunted down.

Houses were burned to the ground or taken from their rightful owner, and wives and children were either put in prison or hanged.

When I think of the bravery of these families that gave the ultimate sacrifice for a fledgling country that had doubtful success all I can know is that I can certainly find a way to make things better for my community as the only thing I risk is falling and getting back up.
